Frequently Asked Questions

Put simply, Studio X offers state-of-the-art instruction from IBJJF World Champion instructors, while still providing a boutique training experience. Our gym is a family business with a rich team history, as it opened its doors in 1995, making it one of the oldest and most storied gyms on the East Coast. Members can expect a relaxed but passionate training environment, personal and professional relationships with coaches and staff, and a unique dedication to helping you reach your goals, all in a safe, controlled, and welcoming space.

Why Studio X?

What should I bring to my first jiu-jitsu class?

All you need to bring is a T-shirt, gym shorts, a towel if you’d like to shower, and flip-flops if you have them. We are happy to offer you a free loan of a jiu-jitsu gi and/or rashguard and combat shorts for your first couple of visits until you get your own. We also sell team-branded gis, rashguards, and more training apparel at the gym for your convenience; feel free to ask about the products we have in stock at the front desk.

I’m interested in jiu-jitsu, but I feel like I’m not “in good shape.” Should I work out before my trial class?

At Studio X, we believe jiu-jitsu is for everyone—and that the best way to get in shape for jiu-jitsu is by doing more jiu-jitsu! Don’t hold yourself back by thinking that you aren’t ready—you’re always ready to start learning a new craft and begin working towards a healthier you.

What resources does Studio X have on-site?

Beyond our well-maintained mat space and dedicated staff, Studio X also has a wide range of workout equipment available for members to use, including a bench and squat rack, kettlebells and dumbells, an assault bike and rowing machine, and more. We have four single-use changing rooms—two showers and two bathrooms—and plenty of space for you to safely store your jacket, shoes, and bags while you’re taking class. Come drop by to find out all that Studio X has to offer.
